Comments invited on Police Commissioner's Budget Proposals

Published: 9th January, 2014

I am inviting comments from members of the public and interested organisations on my outline budget proposals for 2014/15. I am required to set a budget and notify the Police and Crime Panel of my proposed precept by 1 February 2014.

I intend to use current resources in such a way as to ensure that the Force will be resilient as possible to future austerity measures and will minimise the impact on direct services to the public. To do this I am proposing to consolidate initiatives included in the 2013/14 budget, initially funded from reserves into the base budget to guarantee future funding.

This will mean:

· 49 more Police Community Support Officers than the level previously planned

· A fund of £2m for Community Safety initiatives and victims services, for which community groups can bid

· A community ambassador for each police command area to improve liaison with local communities

· Increasing the number of Special Constables

· Accelerating the recruitment of police officers in 2014/15 to ensure vacancies in local policing are filled as quickly as possible

I also intend to provide new funding from 2014/15 for the police to tackle crime in three important areas: rural crime; business crime; and cyber (or internet related crime). This will be available for a five year period.

I am proposing a below inflation increase in council tax of 2% for 2014/15.

As part of the consultation on my budget proposals there will be a live webcast on Tuesday 14 January 2014 at 4 pm. This will give you and others the opportunity to ask questions and watch our responses either live or at a later date. I do hope you will be able to take part.
