Places to Visit
The Strettons and surrounding countryside abound with great walking areas and fabulous views. Most of our visitors are of course walkers. but the town also offers places of interest, and cafes and bars.
The Stretton Antiques Market is one of the most popular areas for browsing indoors on days when the weather is unsuitable for outdoor activites.
For those who do their exploring by car, there are many places to go within very easy reach. The nearest and most obvious is a drive up the Burway, though this is not to be recommended to the faint-hearted motorist nor to anyone who is afraid of heights. The descent to Asterton on the other side of the Long Mynd is quite breathtaking. The drive on up to the Stiperstones is another which should not be missed - the views are magnificent, and the countryside on the west side of the Long Mynd is a patchwork of hedgerows, having so far remained unaffected by modern farming methods - quite different from the east side.
Stokesay Castle, just south of Craven Arms is a must for everyone, for nobody could fail to be impressed by the charm and atmosphere of this fully preserved relic of the past. There are many other English Heritage sites within easy reach - Boscobel (where Charles II hid during his flight from Cromwell), Wenlock Priory, Ironbridge, Wroxeter Roman City , Buildwas Abbey, Haughmond Abbey to name but some. Opening times of Stokesay Castle are: 1 April-30 Sep: 10am-6pm daily. 1-31 Oct: 10am-5pm daily
The National Trust also has properties in the area - Attingham Hall and Park near Shrewsbury are well worth a visit, as are Benthall Hall at Brosely, Dudmaston near Bridgnorth, and Wightwick Manor near Wolverhampton.
The Acton Scott Farm Museum (4m. S.) where there are 22 acres of land worked by shire horses and skilled manpower, demonstrating how a mixed South Shropshire farm would have been managed around 1890. Traditional crafts are demonstrated and there is a picnic area and cafe. The farm livestock includes breeds which were popular in the area 80 or 90 years ago. It is open from Easter to the end of October.
