Ranger Guides-Compete in Europe

STRETTON RANGER GUIDES COMPETE IN EUROPE

STRETTON RANGER GUIDES COMPETE IN EUROPE

Guiding in Church Stretton
is breaking new and exciting ground over the next year.

As part of the Guiding Centenary Celebrations, two major adventures are planned for July and August 2010. One team of local guides will compete in a Centenary Stampede across 6 or 7 European countries. Another team will compete in the world famous round the world Tall Ships Race by being members of the crew between Alborg in Denmark and Kristiansand in Norway.

In both competitions, our Ranger Guides will have the opportunity to expand their international friendships through mixing with their counterparts from other countries and cultures. Preparations have already started for both competitions that will also include environmental and community challenges for each team.

After starting in Paris they will undertake ‘projects’ in the capitals of  Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria and Italy. The final stage will be a dash back to England to celebrate at a huge national gathering of the guiding movement to take place in the Midlands

Younger guides will also have the opportunity to celebrate at a UK national camp in Yorkshire or a Regional Camp in Worcestershire.

A meeting with parents will take place shortly to plan fund raising events.

In addition, at least eight local community organisations have indicated they will be making contributions towards the total costs of this once-in-a-lifetime experience

The Mayor of Church Stretton, Cllr Bob Welch met with Guide Leader, Mrs Ana Ireland, the leadership team and a full turnout of Guides at the weekly meeting in the Parish Centre, Church Stretton on 18th January 2010.

Cllr Welch was updated with celebration preparations and said “the guides were a credit to the town as well as being ambassadors for the whole community”.

The Mayor announced that a civic reception will be held for the Guides in the autumn.
