Severn Valley Railway (21 miles)

The SVR is a full-size standard-gauge railway line running regular steam-hauled passenger trains for the benefit of visitors and enthusiasts alike between Kidderminster in Worcestershire and Bridgnorth in Shropshire, a distance of 16 miles. The journey is full of interest, for the route follows closely the meandering course of the River Severn for most of the way on its journey between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. One highlight of the trip is the crossing of the River Severn by means of the Victoria Bridge - a massive 200-foot single span, high above the water which, incidentally, features in the film 'The Thirty-nine Steps' with Robert Powell in the leading role.

The nearest place to pick up the SVR which is also the end of the line is Bridgnorth.  All in all a great day out.

Shrewsbury (13 miles)

Shrewsbury, Shropshire's county town, is historically fascinating and architecturally magnificent with its Tudor buildings and Percy Thrower designed Dingle. The River Severn meanders its way round the town, with the castle in the plug. Its most recent addition is the Theatre Severn - which offers a superb array of entertaining arts. It has the Cadfael famous Abbey and is the birthplace of Charles Darwin. It is a shopping Mecca and the centre for much of the mid Wales hinterland.

The Stiperstones (6 miles)

Take a walk on the Stiperstones - This is a National Nature Reserve with a difference - being the second hightest hill in Shropshire, the views are magnificent, and the countryside on the west side of the Long Mynd is a patchwork of hedgerows having so far remained unaffected by modern farming methods - quite different from the east side.  Folklore abounds on The Stiperstones. There is The Devil's Chair, the northernmost tor, where His Infernal Majesty is claimed to take up residence at times. A thunderstorm will immediately occur should a human seek to sit in the place.  There are several bronze age cairns along its ridge.

Strettton Area Food Trail

Traditionally produced food is at the heart of Shropshire's richly contrasting landscape.  Follow this food trail example on the more information page to create your very own locally produced meal in the evening!

Source local meats sold from farm shops, and gaze out over the fields where next season's produce is growing. You will find fruit and vegetables picked fresh in the morning, and you can also 'pick your own' starting with strawberries before Wimbledon, through to raspberries and many other farmed fruits. Later in the season and for free, harvest the hills for whinberries and cache the hedgerows for blackberries and sloes.

There are freshly baked pies, preserves and cakes to tempt you and many opportunities to wander round farmers markets. Locally produced real ales can be found at Woods of Wistanstow, the Three Tuns at Bishop's Castle and Hobsons Brewery at Cleobury Mortimer.
